Big Science Business Forum 2024 – Trieste, Italy 165 Big Science Business Forum 2024 – Trieste, Italy 164 This achievement was made possible by nearly two years of intensive preparation and promotion. From the very beginning of the candidacy process, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region paid special attention to involving stakeholders from the Balkans and Central-Eastern Europe , areas that have historically been less present in the Big Science market. To this end, partnerships were established with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and the Secretariat of the Central European Initiative (CEI) , based in Trieste, to promote targeted initiatives (described in Chapter 5.1.3). It is important to note that the implementation of all these activities required extensive preparation and promotion, integrating both existing and new initiatives to engage various national and international stakeholders. Undoubtedly, this was the solid foundation on which the success of the Trieste forum was built, as also evidenced by the results of the survey on the quality of the proposed activities. Post-event High Satisfaction and Future Expectations The high level of satisfaction expressed by participants is reflected in the near- unanimous commitment to attending BSBF2026 , among those who responded to the survey. Many participants expressed expectations for the continuation of innovations introduced in the 2024 edition . Among the most appreciated new features : • Promotional activities , such as the "BSBF visits BSOs" format. • The job opportunities session , organized in collaboration with the EURES Network and the European Commission . However, some innovations receivedmixed feedback—particularly the four-day format adopted for BSBF2024, which several companies and international actors considered too demanding. Conclusions The BSBF2026 program will build on the established structure of the event while focusing on topics with broad consensus. The goal is to further develop new initiatives in close collaboration with the International Organizing Committee (IOC) . A key objective will be the creation of the Big Science Common Market (BSCM) , an initiative proposed at BSBF2024 to: • Facilitate business access to the Big Science sector. • Promote European technological development . • Strengthen global competitiveness . Proposals Under Discussion: STANDARDIZATION OF PROCUREMENT CODES To harmonize procedures and simplify business access, a working group could include representatives from BSOs, EIROforum, PERIIA, industry associations, and other international stakeholders. CREATION OF A COMMON ONLINE MARKETPLACE A single platform compiling tender opportunities from various BSOs, involving PERIIA and the European Commission. MUTUAL RECOGNITION OF QUALIFICATIONS A system to standardize the qualifications required for companies to participate in procurement processes across different BSOs. EXPERIMENTATION WITH NEW PROCUREMENT MODELS & PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS To improve efficiency in collaboration between institutions and businesses. EXPANDING GLOBAL COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER BSOS To enhance synergies and international opportunities. Another strategic goal will be increasing the participation of businesses and stakeholders from regions currently less involved in Big Science , such as Central and Eastern Europe , the Balkans , and the Baltic region . Building a Big Science University Network Parallel to these initiatives, there is a vision to establish a university network dedicated to Big Science , featuring: • Masterclasses and multidisciplinary training programs . • Mutual recognition agreements between universities and BSOs to standardize educational paths. These and other initiatives could be developed through collaborations with external actors , but it will be essential to ensure a constant exchange of information and best practices between these projects and the BSOs within BSBF . Driving a More Efficient and Organized Big Science Industry All these efforts align with the growing need for simplification and reorganization of industrial participation tools in Big Science, a process already underway in many countries. The initiatives promoted by BSBF have demonstrated that these transformations can be led at both the national and international levels. The key element will be the active role of each BSBF partner in strengthening the connection between research and industry, leveraging the experience of BSBF2024 to: • Develop new shared governance models for Big Science. • Deliver increasingly innovative solutions.
